Having grown up on the bench of the legendary New York Knicks Basketball team, Mike’s Dad was an All Pro Basketball player for the Knicks, who later became the head coach. He was huge, they called him Moose! But the biggest influence in Mike’s life was his Mom. She was always reading books and enrolled him in the Great Books series during his middle school years. It changed his life as he became a lifelong reader.
Fast forward several years later, and Mike himself becomes a pro-football player.
During his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles as a ProBowl quarterback, his roommate was a 285lbs football player obsessed with a Broadway Musical at the time, called Pippin. He sang the theme song, Corner of the Sky to Mike every Saturday night prior to NFL Sunday games. After Pippin finally saw the show itself, he agreed to stop singing it. At that point, Mike also became obsessed with the song and began writing musicals.
After retiring from pro football, Mike became an Attorney, with much of his philanthropic and volunteer activity being channeled through his work focusing on highlighting the issues professional football players face with CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) and on the serious nature of concussions sustained in playing professional sports. Additionally, as playwright and actor, Boryla’s one man play, “The Disappearing Quarterback” focuses on the topic and his own traumatic experiences. The play has been performed more than 50 times in Philadelphia and Denver, to rave reviews.
His latest project, “The Mark of the Beast” audio-book release is now being reformatted as a screenplay and is being readied for possible movie production. Additionally, being the only NFL football player to perform a one man play, Mike feels a responsibility to represent them. He has been interviewed extensively, spoken to grade school classes and others about what it is like to be a football player in the major leagues and also have a creative career as a second run.
As a person of enormous influence, Mike encourages football players and sports writers to tell their story. “If I could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what I would urge people to share their stories. You never know what your idea can trigger in another” says Mike.
Mike Boryla is the proud father of four boys, and currently lives in Colorado with his wife Annie, and ER nurse and the love of his life.
