At LLano Feed and Supply, onion starts have arrived, The varieties are 1015Y, Yellow Granex, Texas Legend, Sweet Red, White Granex, and White Bermuda. Josh Rhode called to let us know and Hopefully, Leeks will arrive with the next shipment. I have covered the 1015Y in previous columns, Let’s look at the others. The Yellow Granex was developed in Carrizo Texas by crossing the 1015 and Bermuda making a deep flat onion. Hybrid. These will be the sweetest onion in your garden. Potential size 5 ” storage time 1 to 2 months.Days to harvest 90 to 100 days. They are grown in Vidalia Ga. Noonday Texas and Maui Hawaii. White Granex holds the same qualities. It is pearly white and often called Miss Society.
Texas Legend, this onion is a pollinator for the Vidalia and is revered for its uniformity. Bred explicitly for more health benefits than its parent 1015. Still mild and sweet. This onion has 25 active compounds that inhibit the growth of cancer cells, help combat heart disease, and supports the immune system. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal to ward off colds and relieve stomach upset. This one matured 10 to 15 days earlier than 1015 making it suitable for short-day onions. Potential size 6 inches Storage 3 to 4 months. Days to harvest 100 to 105. Sweet Red blushing throughout, sweet and flavorful. Flattened globe shape. This is the sweetest of the red short-day varieties. Red color has higher concentrations of quercetin, a flavonoid, and antioxidant that slows or delays damage to cells and tissues of the body. A recent study has shown it to help fight diseases and disorders such as cataracts, cardio disorders, and some cancers. White Bermuda. These are recommended for early green onions as they produce a nice large white scallion in 30 days. This is the original onion first grown and brought from the Canary Islands. Sweet and flat. This is the onion our grandparents grew. Known as the cocktail onion and Crystal Wax. White Bermuda is a small white onion. Potential size 3 to 4 inches. Storage potential 2 months.
